The 2019 Porsche Cayenne: A Case for the Best SUV
Luxury, Refinement, and Power Make the Cayenne a Force to be Reckoned With
Published September 7, 2017
If you want an SUV but still appreciate the power of a good sports car, then the 2019 Porsche Cayenne might be the best possible thing you can choose. The new Cayenne is quite possibly the most technologically advanced and best driving SUV…in the world.
Sharing its MLB underpinnings with the latest and , the new Cayenne features an all-aluminum body. Along with some other new changes, the SUV was lightened a bit – by 143 lbs – which is rather surprising considering all of that new tech adorning the interior.
We’ll get to the specifics in a bit, though. For now, let’s just focus on the new looks, as Porsche has very interestingly called upon its Panamera for new inspiration.
Panamera Parallels are Intentional on 2019 Porsche Cayenne
At first glance, not much seems to have been changed from last year, but rest assured, this thing is far sharper than before. The new Porsche Cayenne is longer, lower and wider. A keen observer might also notice the front facade shelters larger air intakes. The headlights have also been reworked to resemble some of the brand’s higher-end offerings, which leaves the Cayenne looking eager for adventure.
While some changes were made for the new model year, Porsche has also opted for business as usual in other areas. The tail lights look almost the same as those on . We liked them there, and we like them here as well.
Inspiration from the Panamera, however, does not stop with the exterior. The updated interior was highly influenced (ctrl+c, ctrl+v) by the Panamera design, and comes with some nifty bells and whistles.
Overkill in the infotainment department includes the addition of a massive 12.3-in center screen. There are two additional screens – both configurable – integrated into the instrument cluster as well.
The infotainment system provides us with a fine glimpse into the advanced tech Porsche has on offer, with its proprietary Communication Management (PCM) system running the center display. Technophiles would have the time of their lives inside this SUV with all of its fancy buttons, switches, and features.
With the new 48-volt electric system powering the super fast anti-roll suspension system and the long-lasting Porsche Surface Coated Brakes (PSCB), the Cayenne is equipped for both off-road and track conditions. Porsche was extremely thorough in testing the new Cayenne, even going so far as to test it in off-road conditions which probably <5% of Cayennes will even be exposed to. This makes us pretty confident that the new Cayenne will be the most fun to drive of all SUVs, and we haven’t even talked about the engine yet.
Engines That Make An SUV A Sports Car
Porsche revealed the Cayenne and the Cayenne S; both petrol powered machines. The base model receives a 3.0L turbocharged V6 developing 335 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. The Cayenne S gets a slightly smaller 2.9L twin-turbo V6 good for 433 hp and 409 lb-ft of torque.
These cars are fast – really fast.
The less powerful one sprints to 62 mph in 5.9 seconds, while the S does the same in 4.9 seconds. If you opt for the Sport Chrono package, that number will even go as low as 4.6 seconds.
Both engines are connected to an all-new 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system with Porsche traction management.
New hardware includes the addition of the three chamber air suspension. It is an all-new system finely tuned to work with the new Porsche 4D Chassis Control (the super fast anti-rollover system). Possibly the most important novelty includes a special 4WS option. Yes, new 2019 Porsche Cayenne features a rear-wheel steering system. More stability at high speed and more maneuverability at low speeds.
While yes, the new may have something to say about being the fastest SUV on the market, the 2019 Porsche Cayenne will undoubtedly be the best all-around SUV. Power is fun, but refinement makes money, and we’re interested to see exactly how the two are going to battle it out.
