Autobahn Shuts Down Due to Wind Turbine Crash
Why You Should Always Maintain a Safe Following Distance
Updated July 19, 2017
Three of the largest wind turbine producers in the world operate out of Germany, so it’s definitely not unheard of to see turbine parts commuting down the autobahn from time-to-time. Most of us have driven behind a blade or a base on the highway by now, and usually without incident…if you keep your distance that is. Get too close, and disaster may strike.
Just the other week, a truck surged and rear-ended a tractor transporting a wind turbine, smashing the turbine and wreaking havoc on the offending driver’s vehicle. The huge turbine blade blocked the entire autobahn for a few hours, scrambling clean-up crews in a logistical nightmare.
A small miracle occurred when the massive turbine destroyed the cabin of the truck that rear-ended the turbine, narrowly avoiding the 61-year-old driver who was more than lucky not to lose his head in the process.
“Half the lorry was crushed,” a police officer on the scene told the local Rheinische Post newspaper.
Wind Turbine Crash as a Major Wake-up Call for Autobahn Motorists
All-in-all, this was a major wake-up call for anyone driving on the Autobahn. Driving close behind a truck carrying a large and heavy load is never a wise thing to do because . Not even the escort car driving behind the tow truck was able to stop the 61-year-old driver from smashing into the rear of the wind turbine. Luckily, no major injuries were reported.
