Stunt Rider Killed On Deadpool 2 Set: AMA Rider Joi “SJ” Harris
Deadpool 2 Stunt Rider Joi “SJ” Harris Dies On Set
Updated August 23, 2018
Filming was called to a halt on the set of Deadpool 2 after a motorcycle stunt rider tragically lost her life whilst recording a scene for the upcoming movie. Joi “SJ” Harris was killed after losing control of her motorcycle which jumped a curb and crashed through a plate glass window inside of Vancouver’s Shaw Tower.
An eyewitness told Metro News about the nature of the accident: “She came out, went down the two flights of stairs, and it looked like she kind of hit the throttle because she picked up speed. She was going full throttle.” The eyewitness also added that Harris “missed two pedestrians,” too. It’s believed that she wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time, because it was not part of her character’s costume.
Stunt Rider Dies On Deadpool 2 Set
This was Harris’s first time performing as a stunt rider for a Hollywood blockbuster, but before she signed up for the movie, Harris has had a long and illustrious career on two wheels. In fact, Joi Harris will go down in history as being the first ever African-American female road racer with official AMA endorsement to race professionally.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, SJ Harris encouraged fellow African-American females to get into the road racing industry, using her success as “the first licensed African American women in U.S. history to actively compete in sanctioned motorcycle road racing events” to get more people interested in the sport.
It’s believed that SJ Harris was acting as a stunt double for the actress Zazie Beetz, who is playing the mutant Domino in the upcoming movie. Scenes featuring Beetz in costume standing near a motorcycle had been spotted a few days before. Ryan Reynolds, who stars as Deadpool, tweeted:
“Today, we tragically lost a member of our crew while filming Deadpool. We’re heartbroken, shocked and devastated… but recognize nothing can come close to the grief and inexplicable pain her family and loved ones must feel in this moment. My heart pours out to them — along with each and every person she touched in this world.”
Deadpool 2’s director, David Leitch told PEOPLE: “I’m deeply saddened by the loss of one of our stunt performers today. No words can express how I and the rest of the Deadpool 2 crew feel about this tragedy. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and loves ones in this difficult time.”
20th Century Fox released this statement: “We are deeply saddened by the accident that occurred on the set of Deadpool 2 this morning. Our hearts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues of our crew member during this difficult time.”
The motorcycle industry lost one of its shining lights. Our thoughts go out to Joi “SJ” Harris’s family.
