EICMA 2015: Ducati’s Multistrada “Pikes Peak”
Inspired by the legendary Pikes Peak hill climb race, Ducati have endeavored to bring out the sporting characteristics of their 2016 1200 S. Having already won the famous twenty kilometer four times, Ducati thought it was time to pay homage to the legendary event, and this is what they’ve come up with.
On the surface, it might just look like a flashy paint job, but there’s a lot more going on than a straightforward race inspired color scheme. The Multistrada comes equipped with a Termignoni exhaust system with a low-racing type carbon screen, a whole host of other carbon fiber components, including a front mudguard, tank cover and nose fairing. The Pikes Peak version naturally comes with Ohlins front forks and an adjustable Ohlins TTX36 at the rear, and an incredibly clever electronics package that boasts cornering ABS, Ducati Wheelie Control, Ducati Traction Control, Cruise Control, an Inertial Measurement Unit developed by Bosch, and a Bluetooth module for connecting the rider with Smart technology, that works with the TFT dashboard.
Rather than just reword whathave said about their engine and other functions, this has been lifted directly from their press release to give you some more clarity:
‘The Multistrada 1200 Pikes Peak is powered by the Ducati Testastretta DVT (Desmodromic Variable Timing) twin-cylinder engine with cutting-edge technology that makes it the segment benchmark. On the timing front, double variable cam phasing acts independently on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. This optimises engine performance throughout the rev range, whatever the riding conditions. It also simultaneously ensures maximum power at high revs, smooth power delivery, good torque at low RPM and contained fuel consumption, all in full compliance with new Euro 4 standards.
‘Like other bikes in the family, the Multistrada 1200 Pikes Peak can mount one or more Ducati Performance accessory packages. Also available – in addition to individual items – are the Touring Pack (which includes heated grips, panniers and centre stand), the Urban Pack (with top case, tank bag with tank lock and USB hub to charge electronic devices), the Enduro Pack (consisting of supplementary LED lights and Ducati Performance components by Touratech: engine crash bars, radiator crash bars, sump guard, a broader kickstand base and off-road footpegs).’
