Leak Shows Mustang Shelby GT500’s Supercharged 5.2L V8 Specs
Seems like not even the secrets of the GT500 are safe
With spy shots of a test mule circulating not too long ago, we know the Shelby GT500 is on its way. However, we still don’t have a date for the release of the limited edition Mustang. We have to look forward to the Detroit Auto Show as the most likely place for an info update.
Until then, we have leaks and spy shots coming from all angles about projects at Detroit’s big three. This time, it’s details about the supercharged 5.2L V8 under the hood of the upcoming Shelby GT500. Aside from the displacement and aspiration, there are also reports of the horsepower and torque. At the moment, it looks like this Mustang will roll out with 680 hp and 630 foot pounds.
Development on this engine, code named Predator, is right around the one year mark right now. As far as we’re aware, the image we’re seeing is the first to be shared with the world. The leak on the Shelby GT500 comes from a Mustang6G forum user. Part of the information dump shows that the car takes 5W50 oil as well as a look into the engine bay. Mind you, that information comes from a 2020 MY North America Vehicle Program sheet. Hopefully that doesn’t mean that the Shelby GT500 will keep us waiting for one more year before making a debut.
The location of the supercharger, between the intercooler and the intake manifold isn’t the only point of interest. The information accompanying the pic also tells us that it has a cross plane crankshaft. As a comparison, the GT350, which did well for itself, had a flat plane crank. The GT500 just can’t get a break because yet another picture shows us that it also comes with huge Brembo brakes.
With only a short wait for the Detroit Auto Show, this will have to tide Ford fans over for now. At the very least, it gives the beginning of an idea of what the Shelby GT500 will be able to do right out of the box.
