When MotoGP Stars Race…110cc Honda Super Cubs? (Video)
When MotoGP Legends Hit The Track On Honda Super Cubs
Watch MotoGP stars Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa battle around Japan’s Motegi circuit riding…110cc ? That’s right, two of the world’s best motorcyclist recently took part in one of the most exciting races we’ve ever seen. It wasn’t a battle of horsepower, and it certainly wasn’t a battle of technology. Instead, the two Honda racers took to the grid riding Honda Super Cubs – and boy did it look like fun.
At the Honda Racing Thanks Day earlier on this month, HRC welcomed some of its most famous names to have a general fun-day session at Japan’s iconic Twin-Ring Motegi circuit. Names like new MotoGP rookie rider Takaaki Nakagami, trial-biker Takashisa Fujinami, motocross rider Tim Gajser, and even Formula One’s Jensen Button made an appearance. However, the spotlight was on Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa, who entered into the funnest looking race ever.
MotoGP Riders Tackle Motegi On Honda Super Cubs
Starting at the back of the grid, the Honda duo managed to furiously ride their Repsol-emblazoned 110cc into first and second place. And that’s no mean feat considering the limitations of that tin 109.1cc overhead-cam engine, with a total of 8 hp and 6.2 lb-ft of torque on tap. That’s not to mention the sketchy drum brakes and generally un-race-like center of gravity. Even so, it looked like a blast to ride – and considering that over 100 million of these mopeds have been manufactured over the last 60 years, many other people would agree.
So there you have it – racing isn’t always about big engines and top-spec machinery. All you need is some space, some little bikes, and a group of friends who feel like having a good time. If you can do a burnout on it – you can race it. As fun as the Honda Super Cubs were, the Honda duo also got to enjoy some more high-end equipment, like taking a Honda F3 car for a spin. Here’s what the two had to say about their fun day out at Motegi:
MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez said: “I had a lot of fun and was able to try many different cars and bikes. This year, for instance, we had the chance to drive an F3 car. It was a new experience that I really enjoyed. It was also an honor to make a lap together with Takuma (Sato) who won at Indy”.
MotoGP Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa added: “driving the F3 car was one of the best experiences. Last year we tried the NSX, which was very nice, but this time was even better, maybe because I could feel the air, like on my bike. It’s possible to brake so late into the corners, and the entire time that I was driving I was thinking about what it would be like in an F1 car.”
