Everything We Know About the New Toyota Supra

Confirmed Supra Info, Leaks, Rumors and Wishful Thinking – All in One

One of the most beloved Japanese sports cars ever produced is finally returning this year with the new Toyota Supra deep in the development phase. Being such an important part of the automotive world, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the Supra’s return is being followed by much hype. So much in fact, that we’ve already seen a few leaks that might suggest some of Supra’s future specs. One of these is a possible leak which we’ve already covered a while back.

Co-Development with BMW

Toyota isn’t developing the new Supra alone. They’re doing it together with BMW. While the Japanese are benefiting from German expertise and their engines and transmissions, the Bavarians are actually getting a cost-effective new rear-wheel-drive platform. A platform which they’ll use to base the upcoming new BMW Z4 upon. The BMW Z4 was actually already presented at the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance which means the new Toyota Supra shouldn’t be that far behind.

Release date and production

How far behind, though, is something we still don’t know. We do know that production of the new Supra is supposed to commence sometime during 2018 or at the very least during early 2019. It also seems that Austrian contract manufacturer Magna Steyr has been approached with this in mind.

Engines and Transmissions

As already noted above, the new Toyota Supra will likely be powered by German technology. This might come as a disappointment for the pure Supra enthusiast out there, but it shouldn’t really. The BMW’s 3.0L turbocharged straight-six is as powerful and capable a powertrain as any. It currently makes up to 335 horsepower, but we’re betting the Supra will manage to squeeze even more out of it.

What should worry Supra enthusiasts, though, is the apparent lack of a manual transmission. The same leaked BMW documents suggest it’ll only be offered with the ZF 8-speed auto. This wouldn’t be the first time Toyota has done that with one of their sporty offerings. After all, Lexus IS, RC, and GS-F all come with mandatory automatics.

There are even talks of an all-wheel drive hybrid drivetrain with a V6 engine and electric motors at the heart of it. This goes hand in hand with the exclusion of a manual transmission which wouldn’t make any sense here.

The Rest

What might come as the most surprising thing of all is that there’s a possibility that the new Toyota Supra won’t be marketed under Toyota badge at all. The president of Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division Shigeki Tomoyama implied it might actually be offered with their own badging. It would also seem that the Supra will be exclusively offered in a coupe form while the BMW Z4 should come as a convertible. Whether that ends up being true, we shall have to wait in order to find out. Will it resemble the FT-1 concept from the 2014 Detroit Auto Show? That’s also something we’ll have to wait in order to find out. One thing is for certain, though. Toyota is testing the new Supra mercilessly at the Nürburgring. Probably while you’re reading these lines. And that can only mean the new Supra is coming soon.

Update: February 13, 2018

The Japanese auto industry giant has confirmed the along-awaited unveiling date for the upcoming Supra. The next-gen sports car will be presented at this year’s Geneva auto show to be held in early March. The BMW’s 3.0L turbocharged straight-six with 335 horsepower has been confirmed, but the Supra will additionally offer some 37 horsepower of overboost. As things stand right now, the car apparently weighs 3,284 pounds and it’s 5.4 inches shorter than its predecessor. It also comes with a 3.2-inch shorter wheelbase but it’s 0.6 inch taller and 1.7 inches wider at the same time. Finally, the new car will apparently be presented wearing the 225/50R-17 front rubber, while donning the 255/45R-17s at the rear. Larger 18s and 19s aren’t excluded as options, especially in the U.S.

We’ll keep on updating this story as new info comes to light.

About Nikola Potrebić

Despite driving a piece of junk, Nikola still manages to survive the harrowing experience called "A road trip in a Yugo," day in, day out. On the other hand, precious few things move him as muscle cars do. Especially those from the bygone golden era, which makes him wonder why wasn't he born a few decades earlier? Well, at least he's been given the opportunity to enjoy the likes of Pontiak Aztek, Chrysler PT Cruiser, Fiat Multipla, and other lovely millennium cars way, right? Come to think of it, I'll stick with my Yugo. Thank you very much.
