Next Gen Subaru WRX STI Will Go Hybrid and You Should Be Happy About It
Torque. A Lot of it
Published November 21, 2017
Don’t be alarmed, the Subaru WRX STI is still very much alive in the US. After all, since the last generation sprung to life back in 2015, the has been one of the biggest Subaru hits. Since its introduction, the company managed to turn 2,100 to 3,200 units of the WRX every month. That is huge.
However, it is not the same case in the rest of the world. Subaru ceased its WRX and WRX STI operations in the UK. Actually, the official importer of the Subaru in the UK – the IM Group, discontinued the STI. Luckily, Dominik Infante, Subaru’s National Manager, Product Communications confirmed that they will continue with their US operations:
“”We plan to keep the STI here in the US and we have plans for the future as well. It’s a very important part of our business.”
Subaru WRX STI Goes Eco-Friendly With a Hybrid Setup
The news of ceasing the selling efforts of the WRX STI in the UK did resonate throughout the gearhead world. It goes to show how much people like the car. So, before you figure out that the Subaru WRX STI will cease to exist in a few short years like the did not long ago, I am here to tell you that the car will probably reach its next generation. But not as you may imagine.
Get your head around this name – Subaru WRX STI Hybrid. Yes – a hybrid.
So, the WRX STI will go green. It may even be a good thing to have a CO2-emission compliant WRX STI with one or more e motors. Just imagine the possibilities of the WRX STI with a turbocharged engine and electric power. Torque will go up which, with the symmetrical all-wheel-drive, can only do good for gearheads of the world.
Some of the European colleagues actually talked with Subaru officials. European sales and marketing manager for Subaru, David Dello Stritto confirmed that the current WRX STI will ditch the 2.5-liter turbocharged unit. He said that the engine “can simply not exist in the future.”
In short, we can expect a plug-in Hybrid Subaru WRX STI looking a lot like the stunning concept car revealed a few weeks earlier. Not only will it go hybrid, but it will most certainly go upscale. Let’s be real – it is the most sensible thing Subaru can do.
Viziv Performance Looks Good and the WRX STI Will Too
The Viziv Performance concept actually does reveal a number of important tech advancements we can expect from the new Subaru lineup. First of all, it presents the new Subaru Global Platform. Considering that the platform was constructed to allow the installation of the hybrid setup, and the WRX STI will sport the same platform, it is only logical to assume it will be a plug-in hybrid. However, the company did not actually confirm anything, which means, for now, we’re really just left daydreaming.
