The 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport.

It seems like automaker Land Rover/Range Rover has take a rather large leap of faith with their totally new, and completely redesigned Land Rover Discovery. Now, off of first glance one would think it was a 2015 or 2016 Evoque, but then that person would be severely wrong. That person being me, was, and still is totally befuddled on what the Hell is going on here. Maybe it’ll grown on me.

So, here we have the 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport in all of its small packaged glory, and poshness. I know it’s not a real word, but work with me here. As I mentioned before, creating this new vehicle as it were, had to have been a real testament of faith on behalf of the CEO’s of Land Rover, because I don’t really see the point in this vehicle’s existence. It just seems like, the Evoque wasn’t enough for the world, so another offspring of the motivationally challenged had to put forth this idea, and then actually make it happen. I mean, I just watched a video of the Evoque being bested by the 2015 Porsche Macan, but then turn around and watch the Evoque crawl around a skate park as if it really meant something to the world. OK, let’s refocus our attention back to this Land rover Discovery Sport for a little bit longer.

Now, if you take a moment to think about what a Land Rover of maintaining the same body style, and lines, then why would the world need a, “Sport” version of it? This new Discovery Sport has been slated as the, “First new member of the expanding Discovery family”. So what this basically means is that, over time the Land Rover Discovery Line will have a few more options popping up down the road. With that out of the way, we can dig into the Land Rover Discovery Sport for a bit, and see what’s under the skin. First off, there’s a 2.0 Liter, Turbocharged 4 Cylinder engine, that’s producing a mere 240Hp, to the Haldex AWD system. Wait there’s more. This new Sport model, has not only been slated as a compact SUV, but this little gem, can carry 7 people around too. I know, seriously? For some reason Land Rover figured that because their LR4 model could hold a 5 people easily, they thought, “Why not squeeze in two more, and see what happens?” The people in England must be short, because this sounds like a bad idea. A “Compact SUV” that has a 5 + 2 seating arrangement? SMH…….

Inside of the 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport is what you would normally find in a vehicle with the name of Land Rover spread all over the front of the hood. Leather is standard in all models, it just gets softer and more supple as the more expensive they get. There’s a center console that includes an 8 inch full color touchscreen, that controls all of the infotainment that theLand Rover took the time to mention how that the 2nd row of seats in the new Discovery Sport have been raised by about 2 inches in order to provide a stadium style seating arrangement, which helps out tremendously in the leg room department. The +2, or the 3rd row seats, can be folded into a flat position, which accommodates, or really provides the same amount of luggage space one would have in a Rover with just two sets of seats. {For those of you who didn’t catch it, here it is in plain English. The 3rd row seats are going to be tight, and no adult really belongs back there.} The good news is that there’s ample amounts of hidden storage pockets and connections for those Apple Iphone users who constantly have a need to charge their phones all the time. (The truth stinks doesn’t it?)

If we take a minute to go over the way this Discovery Sport is supposed to drive, we will find out that Land Rover has really spared no expense in making this vehicle as capable as it’s predecessor. The Haldex AWD system is linked to an electronically controlled, 9 Speed transmission that can either be left up to it’s own devices, or be motivated by the paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. Now even with this Discovery looking like it belongs on the asphalt only, Land Rover has taken great steps to ensure everyone that it can handle just about anything you can throw it into. There are the usual multitude of knobs, switches, and gauges that allow this Rover to crawl at a severely low gear, wade in a few meters of water, ascend & descend hills, and so much more. Granted I wouldn’t want to perform all of these amazing feats of technology with a fully loaded vehicle. 2 to 3 extra people at most, not 5 or 6.

At the end of the day, this is like always, Land Rover’s way of staying relevant in the automotive world. We all know that the world has a few million people who either have wealth beyond their wildest dreams, or can simply go ahead and drop $100,000 dollars on any car they want. But you have billions more out there, who can only afford what’s reasonable, and what works well, and this my friends has one of those two qualities. This 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport can only, and basically will only be compared to certain vehicles due to its price range. With starting prices of $40,000, the Blue Collar Worker will surely not be one of those waiting on line buy one of these for his family. We’ll definitely see these rolling around the ragged roads of merry Ol’ England where they cost less, and they have enough rich people who would be willing enough to buy one, that’s only if the Macan can’t do it any better.

The Car scene is so diverse Where I come from, most enthusiasts recognize the amazing engineering (particularly the engines). The bulk of the ridicule originates from the manner in which many of the vehicles are modded/maintained. Thus, the jokes and or hate tends to be aimed more at the owner rather than the machine. All of which makes seeing properly sorted old Toyota's and Hondas at car meets, auto shows, and track days all the more refreshing.

At Autowise, we envision ourselves as not just a automobile blog or an automobile news website, instead we see our website as a platform to connect all automobile enthusiast and provide them with all the information they need.
