Unveiled: The Exclusive BMW HP4 RACE – 212HP And Limited To 750 Units!

After weeks of speculation the new BMW HP4 specs have finally been unveiled!

Updated August 21, 2018

It wasn’t much of a surprise when unveiled this exclusive carbon fiber machine in China at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show. We’d seen the prototype concept before at EICMA, and then BMW hinted that they were going to unveil: “one of the most exclusive models ever offered” by the German company. It could only be one thing, couldn’t it: the BMW HP4 Race. And here it is.

BMW HP4 Specs 1

At 2016’s EICMA show, we were given nothing to work with, save for a few striking images. Now, we’ve got the details. In brief, the BMW HP4 Race is a monster of motorcycle, with a peak power figure of 212 hp, an overall (wet) weight of 377 lbs. In truth, it’s lighter and more advanced than BMW’s S1000RRs that they use for the World Superbike Championship, and because of that the HP4 Race will be limited to 750 exclusive units.

The New BMW HP4 Specs

The super light nature of the HP4 Race is down to its carbon fiber frame, bodywork, and wheels – even the rear tail section is carbon fiber. The main frame weighs a mere 17 lbs, and if the press information has been interpreted correctly, the carbon frame may be available to purchase for existing S1000RR owners, in place of the regular aluminum arrangement. That would be awesome, but take that with a grain of salt for the time being. Start saving, regardless though.

Despite the carbon fiber main frame, BMW opted to give the HP4 an aluminum swing arm. The original concept that we saw last year had a carbon fiber swing arm, but it seems the change to aluminum was intentional to give the BMW HP4 Race better handling.

One of the most significant weight reductions comes from the wheels, where BMW Motorrad have claimed that they’ve managed to drop the weight by 30% by swapping out the existing forged aluminum units in favor of carbon fiber. 30% is pretty damn impressive.

Naturally, the HP4 Race comes with a lot of other upgraded features for the rolling chassis, including Öhlins FGR 300 forks at the front and an Öhlins TTX 36 GP shock at the rear, and Brembo brakes. The Brembo units are GP4 PR monoblock calipers with titanium pistons and nickel plated surfaces, matched with Brembo 320 mm steel disc brakes.

What about the engine though? Where did that extra boost of 13 hp come from? The peak power now sits at 212 hp at 13,900 rpm, and the peak torque has increased from 89 lbs – ft at 10,000 rpm. BMW haven’t specified where this power increase has come from, but we do know that the red line has been upped to 14,500 rpm, and that the engine has been built to a similar specification as their options from the BMW Racing catalog.

BMW HP4 Specs 7

Thanks to the impressive BMW HP4 specs, the Race edition is a track only model, it comes with a race-orientated electronics suite, controlled by its 2D dash. The track-focused electronics package includes the usual traction control, engine braking control, launch and wheelie controls that we’re familiar with, as well as a pit lane limiting feature, too.

BMW HP4 Specs 8

The BMW HP4 Race will be limited to 750 units, and if you want one, you’d better be prepared to pay a lot for the pleasure. BMW Motorrad USA hasn’t yet announced the US prices, but in the UK and Europe, the prices are £68,000 and €80,000. In US Dollars, that’s in the $85k ball park. And probably worth every cent of it.

I’ve done a bit of work here and there in the industry – I’ve even ridden a few bikes for actual money but what it comes down to is this: I ride bikes, build bikes and occasionally crash ‘em too. I like what I like but that certainly doesn’t make my opinion any more valid than yours…
